What is your birthstone?

Birthstones and their vivid colors have long been a way to connect your birth month with rare and unique gemstones. They are a meaningful gift for mom, a friend, spouse, or family member during a special occasion. The origin of birthstones is believed to date back to the breastplate of Aaron which contained twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel. The current list dates back to 1912 with only one addition since then – the tanzanite was added to December. There are numerous legends and myths about birthstone healing powers and their therapeutic influence. According to these legends, wearing a gemstone during its assigned month heightened its healing powers. Here are the stones:

  • January Birthstone: Garnet
  • February Birthstone: Amethyst
  • March Birthstone: Aquamarine
  • April Birthstone: Diamond
  • May Birthstone: Emerald
  • June Birthstone: Pearl or Alexandrite
  • July Birthstone: Ruby
  • August Birthstone: Peridot
  • September Birthstone: Sapphire
  • October Birthstone: Tourmaline or Opal
  • November Birthstone: Topaz or Citrine
  • December Birthstone: Tanzanite, Zircon or Turquoise

Origins: Gad & Co’s story
In an editorial published in the September 2017 edition of Hong Kong’s leading tourism magazine, CityLife, the inception of Hong Kong’s premier high jewellery salon, Gad & Co., is documented. The story begins with Doron Gad, the company’s founder. He moved to America in 1981, at the ripe age of 16, with his guitar in one hand and his dreams in the other. By the time he was 18 , he founded Gad & Co. in the famed 47th Street “Diamond District” of New York City. After Amir Gad, his younger brother and future Director of the company, finished his army service, he was brought in by his brother Doron to help him expand the company. By the 1990’s, they had become one of the biggest traders of rare precious gemstones and had a budding tourism business in central american cruise ports with over 25 shops, along with their new operation in Hong Kong, which they started in 1997.
